The classic “old grumpy grandpa” saying goes something like this: “Back in my day, we walked 15 miles to school in the snow! Barefoot! Uphill! Both ways! And we liked it that way!”For Eagle Peak Middle School eighth grade science teacher Paula Abajian, there is some truth in that saying for her, as she spent 13 days hiking through snow and ice to get access to a vehicle, to then drive or be driven to school. ‘Shattered earth’: 4.6-magnitude quake shakes Humboldt County … again

With domestic violence case pending, California man arrested for killing a former romantic partner

A 36-year-old Anaheim man, out on bond while a domestic violence case was pending, was charged Tuesday with murder in the death of an ex-girlfriend, Orange County court records show.Aaron Stevan Romo also faces an enhancement of a secondary offense committed while released from custody, court records show. He was scheduled to make his first appearance on the new charges Tuesday.Romo was arrested in Riverside County hours after police responded to an apartment in the 1900 block of South Union Street in Anaheim and found 24-year-old Mirelle Mateus of La Palma dead inside just before 2:30 p.m. on March 17, police said.Detectives determined Mateus was killed and identified Romo as the suspect, police said, but they did not provide details on Mateus’ injuries or what evidence they had linking Romo to the crime.Romo was being held without bail, police said.Detectives said Romo and Mateus were previously in a romantic relationship.Related ArticlesCrime and Public Safety | Parent...

Geologists checking hillsides threatening Southern California apartment buildings as more rain falls

In the 1970s, surf wear brand Ocean Pacific’s clothing – specifically OP’s super-short corduroy shorts – was worn by just about every Southern California surfer or skater; the unofficial uniform of the counterculture then seeped out to the rest of the world.The apparel brand’s co-founder, Jim Jenks, who started the clothing line after recognizing the need for a better performance surf short while catching waves, died on Sunday, March 19, in his San Diego home. 30 Woodside homes under 'Highly Recommended Evacuation' due to landslide

(KRON) -- The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office reported a landslide on the 600 to 800 blocks of Patrol Road in Woodside impacting approximately 30 homes. The area is under a "Highly Recommended Evacuation" and the road has been shut down, officials said."If you live in this area, please pack your 'Go Bag,' with necessary essentials: insurance policy, pets, medications, a change of clothes, and LEAVE NOW," the sheriff's office tweeted. "Once the road gives out completely, residents in that area will not have access to emergency services." Officials said the evacuation location is to be determined. Stay updated on the latest Bay Area storm Edgewood Road just off of I-280 near Redwood City is also closed due to a landslide that happened overnight. Cars were being turned around Wednesday morning by signs saying the road is closed. Storm causes glass to fall from San Francisco high-rises

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Several reports of falling glass from San Francisco high-rise buildings have been confirmed due to Tuesday's powerful storm. The San Francisco Police Department confirmed reports of a window falling from Millenium Tower at 301 Mission Tuesday during the storm as well as damaged windows at the Salesforce Tower at 415 Mission. Bay Area storm updates: Power outages, Flood Advisories, road closures No injuries were reported and SFPD officials said they are working with building management regarding the damage.Falling glass was also reported from a San Francisco high-rise located at 50 California. The glass pieces fell on the Sacramento Street side of the building. A structural engineer confirmed to KRON4 that the glass that broke was spandrel glass — glass that goes from the actual window down to the floor.
