Maplewood man gets 40-year prison term for killing girlfriend’s 17-month-old daughter

Ramsey County Judge Leonardo Castro had direct words for Terrance Leslie on Thursday before sentencing him to 40 years in prison for the October murder of Jamari Hne, a 17-month-old girl who was repeatedly assaulted and burned by hot water.Castro told Leslie that he committed “evil, devilish deeds” and the “most cowardly act imaginable to mankind: brutally taking the life of a precious and innocent child.”Terrance Valdez Leslie (Courtesy of the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office)The Maplewood toddler, who was the daughter of Leslie’s then-girlfriend, suffered burns to her face, bleeding in the brain, arm fractures and injuries consistent with sexual assault. A former Minneapolis police officer pleaded guilty Thursday to criminal vehicular homicide in a 2021 traffic crash that killed a 40-year-old St. Paul man.Brian Cummings was pursuing a suspect in his MPD squad car on July 6, 2021, when he ran a red light and struck another vehicle at high speed, killing Leneal Lamont Frazier, according to the criminal complaint against Cummings.In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors dropped a charge of second-degree manslaughter, court documents say. Downtown Mississippi River likely crested Wednesday, but flood precautions continue

Well, that was anticlimactic.The Mississippi River in downtown St. Paul had been predicted to crest on Thursday, but the National Weather Service now says this likely happened shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday.The weather service reported a crest at 18.24 feet, or little more than a foot above major flood stage, at 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, with river levels dropping to 18 feet as of Thursday afternoon. The Mississippi at Harriet Island was still lapping recreational fields and seating areas well inland of the Harriet Island pavilion, a watery intruder into parking lots and pedestrian walkways.From the Watergate Marina to Pig’s Eye Lake, segments of eight streets and 17 parklands throughout the city remain closed.The river is expected to continue to gradually recede over the next week, though river levels are still forecast to exceed 15 feet, or moderate flood stage, into the morning of May 4. The lot on Clinton Avenue will house the new small business incubator expansion. It's a $5 million project that will help train and assist local entrepreneurs. Colorado to allow DACA recipients to work as armed police officers

Colorado’s immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have temporary legal status or those who have applied for asylum could soon work as armed police officers in the state.Gov. Jared Polis signed HB23-1143 into law on Thursday, allowing the state’s Peace Officers Standards and Training board to establish rules for people with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status and asylum seekers to become certified peace officers or reserve officers.
