Suspected San Francisco killer arrested on Fillmore Street

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A suspected killer was arrested in San Francisco this week in connection to a summer homicide, police said. The victim was fatally shot in the Bayview District on Quesada Avenue at 11:10 p.m. on August 4. The victim was pronounced deceased at a hospital. Homicide detectives identified a San Francisco man, 35-year-old Shilo Mitchell, as the prime suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest. Mitchel remained at-large until he was spotted by patrol officers on Fillmore Street Tuesday. "SFPD officers from Northern station were patrolling the area of the 1100 block of Fillmore Street when they recognized Mitchell from his outstanding warrant and placed him under arrest," police wrote. Mitchell was booked into a San Francisco County jail on one count of murder. He remained in custody as of Thursday afternoon with no bail, inmate records show.

SJ Mayor to announce proposed catalytic converter theft ordinance

(BCN) -- San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan and city councilmembers David Cohen and Pam Foley on Thursday morning will discuss their proposal for a new ordinance that, if passed, would allow law-enforcement to charge those in unlawful possession of unmarked catalytic converters. Ex-pilot Joseph Emerson released from jail, allowed to return home to Bay Area They said in a statement that current laws only allow authorities to charge suspects if the seized converter has an identifier attached, which they say is often removed by thieves before selling them. NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is rising Thursday following its first three-day losing streak since Halloween.The S&P 500 was 0.7% higher in late trading and continuing to hang near its highest level since March 2022. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 62 points, or 0.2%, as of 3 p.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 1.2% higher.Big Tech stocks helped power the market higher, led by a 5.5% jump for Google’s parent company, Alphabet. They’re Wall Street’s most influential stocks because of their massive size, and they have been on huge tears so far this year. US Soccer Federation to built training center in Fayetteville, Georgia, outside Atlanta

CHICAGO (AP) — The U.S. Soccer Federation’s new training center will be built in Fayetteville, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta about a 30-mile drive from downtown Atlanta.The USSF announced the specific site adjacent to Trilith Studios on Thursday after saying on Sept. 15 it intended to construct a complex in the Atlanta area. Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United owner Arthur Blank is contributing $50 million for the project. The complex will be more than 200 acres.The USSF said in 2002 that the complex in Carson, California, would serve as its national training center. While that has been used often for winter training camps, the men’s national team has located training ahead of games at sites more convenient for its matches, such as in Florida ahead of games in the Caribbean and Central America and near the venues of home games. Virginia expects to wipe out pandemic unemployment backlog next summer

(AP) — The Virginia agency that processes unemployment benefits has made progress clearing pandemic-related backlogs, but it isn’t expected to finish until next summer, a top official told lawmakers this week.Jeff Ryan, chief deputy commissioner of the Virginia Employment Commission, told lawmakers at an oversight committee meeting Wednesday that so-called first-level appeals are the largest backlog pressure point, with an estimated 45,000 cases the agency doesn’t expect to clear until July 2024.Ryan also said the agency has sped up first-time payments, though he acknowledged continued struggles to provide some core services. VICTORIA, Seychelles (AP) — The tiny Indian Ocean island nation of Seychelles declared a state of emergency Thursday after flooding killed three people and a huge blast at an explosives depot near the capital injured scores of others.The explosion caused mostly minor injuries to 178 people, the health ministry said. It took place around 2 a.m. Thursday and came after hours of heavy rain and flooding starting Wednesday evening, mostly in the north of the main island of Mahe, though authorities did not link the blast to the weather.Waters from the rains flooded houses, washed away parts of roads and caused landslides in some areas.
