Before his peers would label him a heretic, the late Bishop Carlton D. Pearson was once one of the best known preachers in the nation. His skilled biblical oration, steeped in the Black Pentecostal tradition and melded with white evangelicalism, helped swell the membership of the storefront church he started in 1981 in Jenks, Oklahoma, to a full-service, multiracial congregation of more than 5,000.But things changed dramatically in the 2000s. Pearson underwent a cataclysmic theological shift that altered the course of his life – and his legacy among the canon of American Christian leaders. Pearson, 70, died Nov. 19 after a brief battle with cancer. Fire crews battle two-alarm blaze at three-storey home in midtown

No injuries have been reported at a two-alarm house fire in midtown.Fire crews were met with heavy smoke and flames from a vacant three-storey home on St. Clair Avenue West, just west of Avenue Road, when they arrived just before 5:30 a.m. Saturday.Firefighters say an offensive attack was initiated and a primary search of the residence was carried out but they found no one at the home. Crews have since switched to a defensive mode to bring the blaze under control.Paramedics say they did transport anybody to the hospital.

Zambia landslides bury miners digging tunnels illegally, killing 7 and leaving more than 20 missing

LUSAKA, Zambia (AP) — Seven miners were confirmed dead and more than 20 others were missing and presumed dead after heavy rains caused landslides that buried them inside tunnels they had been digging illegally at a copper mine in Zambia, police and local authorities said Saturday.No bodies had yet been retrieved after the landslides late on Thursday night, police said. Many of the victims were believed to have drowned.The miners were digging for copper ore at the Seseli open-pit mine in the copper-belt city of Chingola, around 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of the capital, Lusaka, according to police. AUSTIN (KXAN) — One person died early Saturday after a vehicle reportedly hit a pedestrian in southeast Austin, according to Austin-Travis County EMS.Officials said the incident occurred in the 4900 block of Burleson Road shortly before 2 a.m.Medics obtained a “deceased on scene pronouncement” for an adult, according to ATCEMS.It is unclear if the vehicle involved remained at the scene following the incident.
